I was with British Gas and decided to change to Scottish Power, gave them a meter reading, after a couple of months I changed to another provider and I've just got a final bill through for £70.... on a pay as you go energy meter.

I rang up and the guy said I needed to give them a final reading so I ask him how I do that and he said I would have needed to give them a reading from August 7th when it switched over, I never took a reading because I was waiting for the Smart Meters to be installed.

I asked the guy how I can give him a meter reading and he said he didn't know and that it was my responsibility to give them a final reading despite the letter I got saying sorry for leaving us never saying I had to.

He kept saying that it was my responsibility and that I should give them a reading, I asked to borrow his Delorean time machine and he started getting all stroppy with me saying if I don't pay it in full today it will go to a collection agent and it will incur further fees.

How can I run up a £70 debt on a pay as you go gas meter when it has always been in credit??????

The best thing to do is take a reading now and work it out from a previous reading. So if you took a reading on 19/07/14 and you work out that you used 200 kWh over those 62 days, then with a little maths you add 61 onto the reading you took on 19/07/14.

It's by no means exact, but it should be pretty close.

I feel your pain here - I made a post about my scottish power experiences a few weeks ago on here in GD somewhere, have a search for it. lots of people posted their issues!

It's not just British Gas! I'm with EON who have decided to put my electricity bill up from £22 a month to £73 because of my increased usage. However, I'm only at home 3 days a week and use much less electricity than previously.

It's not down to me to prove that I don't use as much as they say!

Thanks man, managed to work it out from last reading I think.

It's in m3, 4685m3, worked out I've used 350kWh~ from the day I switched, converted it back to m3 and it comes to 4655m3 I think.....

Happily leaving them at the end of this month. When I gave them meter readings once a month I assumed it would adjust my direct debit. Me being stupid didnt check this and over the winter it didnt adjust for my high usage. It never emailed me or sent me any letters so I was unaware of the bill growing.

When I went to print a Bill off I was horrified I was £500 debit. Rang SP straight away and when I gave them a metre reading it shot to nearly £800. The bint on the phone said I should have got lots of warnings etc.

So 6 months of paying that off which they then confirmed to be an IT error for not notifying or sorting my bill.

No wonder they are the worst rated for customer service.

Bloody hell that is ridiculous, and obviously you got the blame even though it was their mistake.

Haha, I'm on hold back to the guy who I asked to borrow his Delorean time machine and Power of Love from Back to the Future just came on.

I had problems with simple things like submitting readings and paying bills. So I decided to leave them. I asked for a final bill. They sent one for £150 - about twice what it should have been. I called and explained. They sent me a replacement bill for £300. I called and explained. They sent debt collectors. Luckily the debt collectors saw sense.

even though you were on pay as you go, could there be some setup charges and possably a charge for leaving them in <12 months?

I made sure there were no early termination fees and they are saying it could be standing charge racking up debt, but I checked the meter and it shows there is no debt attached to it and not sure how I could rack up £70 in a couple of months at 20p~ per day.

They are a joke. We have moved from them to another provider and we're still awaiting final bill some 3 months later.

I was in the same position as you, no final bill after 5 months. I contacted them after reading this story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29140613. Quoting Ofgem and www.myenergycredit.com. Got a reply 2 days later saying they owed me money and the cash 3 days later.

Edit: Through this link btw http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/contact.process?execution=e1s1

See above, did not much effort into it either, just sent this:

Hello,

I switched supplier in April and submitted meter reading to my new supplier on **** April. I have not received a final bill from Scottish Power yet. I believe I am due a refund and was directed here to contact you by Ofgem and www.myenergycredit.com.

Regards,
