Scraping Sound from Rear Wheel in Corolla (05)

Yesterday I noticed a scraping sound coming from the rear right wheel of my Toyota Corolla (05).

It occurs at all speeds and even when the brakes are not depressed.

I have a feeling that the brake pads are worn as the ABS seems to be kicking in at times when it shouldn't, but I wouldn't have thought that that would cause the scraping sound I am hearing.

Take a look at if you even have any pad material.

Book the car in at a garage and explain the issue then.

Infact just take it to Toyota, they're very reasonable

I was planning on doing that on Monday, but I have to drive 150 miles today so was a little worried

In that case go to the wheel and try and get pictures of the calliper from the top.

You see the brake calliper mount arrow, try and take a picture on that angle. On either side of the discs you had pads that press against the disc, I need to see that pad. That pad sits inside the caliper.

Will I be able to take that with the wheel still on?

Should do if your alloy has big enough gaps. Just point the camera in and try and snap some pictures of the top of the calliper. A picture of the complete disc will also help.

The car is just being washed so will do so when it's done. Should make things easier too

Have you checked the brake dust protector thing at the back of the disc. It could have come loose.

Behind the brake disc there is another disc looking piece of metal. That is the brake dust protector to stop damage to the disc. If you jack the car up and spin the wheels you will be able to tell which wheel it is and check to see if the protector has come loose. Happened on my EX's mk5 Golf.

Your pads look a little thin to me. The protector is the metal thing that you can see behind (bigger that the disc) the disc from this pic

Pad overhanging the unused part of the disc seems odd, the pad guide looks a bit bent and twisted to me too? Bit hard to see from the pics, but there could well be an issue there.

^^ as above. That's probably the source of your scraping sound. Looks like the pad has slipped out of place. That's symptomatic of something having caused that though.

It's hard to be certain of anything from those pictures, but your noise could be caused by something as simple as a small stone being trapped behind backplate ("dust shield")

We're talking brakes though, so get it checked out by a professional at the earliest opportunity.
