Scrappage Continued

I both love and hate the Daily Mail's approach in almost equal measure, but despite being a reader I freely admit it's more like a comic than a proper news paper. Richard Littlejohn is great, so is Max Hastings ...I used to like Melanie Philips before I went to univeristy got and bit older and mellowed out a bit ...now she seems to be going off the deep-end, still ...makes for an entertaining read ...although I can 85% guess what she will write about something before I even see it now.

I hate the scheme myself but my grandad traded in his old totoya corolla. It had 200k on it, was really really ***** and abused as it was a delivery car.

He wouldn't have got £2k for that privately but I think he could have still got a discount on a panda before this daft scrappage scheme.

Funny you should mention that, a while back a mate of mine was driving and stopped to help an old couple who had broken down on the side of the motorway. They were in some manky old Corolla from the 80s and were really upset because they were trading it in for scrappage and the head gasket had gone. They thought this meant the car would no-longer qualify.

No idea if that's true or not, but we towed them to a petrol station just around the corner from the dealership, filled the coolant up with tap water and managed to get the car running, barely, so that they could drive it into the dealership and claim ignorance.

That's the kind of car that we really do want rid of on the scrappage.


Also, I like the comment on page 3 about that photo looking just like a Tesco car park. It's very apt, even the standard of parking is about right for my local Tesco.

Ok, I appreciate that many of those cars won't be upto much upon close inspection but can't see it being the majority.

The Election is announced later today apparently, we all know how to vote, I'm sure....:rolleyes::p:(

It was that one so I'm glad I never have to be seen dead in it ever again. No headrests....stinking of chinese food and an interior with cheaper plastics than a transit van :(
 
those scrappers must be onto a gold mine if they keep and sell on valuable items such as lights, mudflaps, optional extras, wheels etc. there is someone in our club that does this too and when ever a primera comes in he always has rare bits and bobs for sale.

the government could do a real nice thing and instead of scrapping them. give them away to third world countries. it seems such a waste scrapping perfectly decent cars.

The figures are shocking.

400,000 cars scrapped x £1,000, £400m cost to the tax payer, temporarily protecting 4,000 UK jobs in the motor industry.

thats £100,000 per job saved over the 1 year the scrappage scheme ran.
 
Its not that simple, the government also charges vat on those cars sold so its not £1000 per car unless you assume the scrappage scheme made no difference to sales. If we took the other extreme that none of those cars would have ever sold otherwise then the cost was zero pretty much.

What probably happened is the average car sales figures over 3 years will change very little, all it did was move sales forward in the chain and also destroyed some asset worth of the uk population in the process, ie. the cost of the scheme is with the purchaser more then anyone else

Generally I agree with you but the keynesianism argument is that money is better used in the economy then held by government because secondary effects allow further tax intake after workers spend it and so on

Ditto Neo, I'd rather spend money doing up one of the older but capable models in that pic then have something new but I know its the opposite with most people


My sig pic is a rotating one Fox so Im not sure which model you mean, unfortunately I dont own any of the fine cars displayed



The MR2 or Merc in the foreground would be good, lose the merc some weight and add some power :) Or that Old Saab Convertible, I always wanted an older Saab before they got taken over

that picture totally shocking, a lot of newer cars there, surely they should have selled them to the general public, for cars that are a lot older that have failed the MOT.

shakes fist, i own a R reg car 118k and it's still going, for what reason should i scrap it when it runs well. stupid goverment with stupid schemes.

the government should have done it to cars that were 10 + years older with a failed MOT.

A few numbers to the scrappage scheme.

It is estimated that the scheme cost nowhere near the £400 million due to the increase in VAT income, however the scheme pushed more currency abroad.

The recent Treasury Select Committee report on scrappage said that the only impact on new vehicle sales it had made was to bring forward purchases that would have been likely made in 2010 and 2011 anyway.

Today it was also revealed that the number of cars on Britain's roads fell for the first time in donkey's years, by 0.7%.
 
If the car was over £6700 the government would have got the £1k back in VAT. A few Hyundai i20s at £9500 and they get a little extra.
 
Annoyingly our Polo waited until the end of the scrappage scheme to start knocking like a bag of spanners. From an aerial shot 1/4 mile away that would have looked like a half decent motor too ;)

Considering the cars on our list of replacements (low value and difficult to get a decent amount off list) scrappage would have been ideal.
