Scrapping Car?

My mates got a Fiat Panda sat in his filed, SORN'd. He insures it for something silly like £100 a year, and gets all his NCB built up !

:D That's clever as hell!

/looks to buy scrapped 1.1 Nova

But can't the insurance check that the car is declared SORN?

when i scrapped our h2r volvo in rome we hadn't got the v5 through the post yet. Just got a recipt of scrapping from the scrap yard and sent it off with the v5 filled in to the dvla and got a nice letter back saying cheers, its now scrapped.

The scrap yard is supposed to sign the v5 and send it off, but you can get round that if you ask nicely / take it abroad

edit - i wonder how much of a car you need to have for it to count as a car....

/siliconslave cuts up old rust bucket bins all the bits and keeps the VIN plates :D

and i've insured SORN'd cars, your still insuring them against theft, fire and other peeps introducing their cars to them at high speed ain't you :)

You cannot legally insure something which you do not have an insurable interest in. A scrapped car is something you have no insurable interest in.

Plus the fact that filling in the details and saying you own said car when actually the car doesn't even exist is, technically, lying, and of course lying for financial gain (in this case the financial gain being discount achieved through building NCB) is fraud.

Soooooooo there we go.

1.2 Nova and 1.4Si Metro that engine actually works fine but rusted to hell.

I will keep insuring the Metro for NCB if I can just scrape it.

Cut a few bits of Nova out (slam panel and engine block should do it, also include the bit with the VIN) and stick them in your garage. You still own the car.

I insured my old escort's battery for about a year after I sold it. £250 pa TPFT and another years ncd. I put a reduced mileage on it as well.

I don't know if you could get away with it now seeing as the MOT results the tax details from the DVLA and the insurance companies are all joined up and talking to each other.

Find a scrap yard which wont ask for the V5 (plenty about) take off the number plates and angle grind any numbers off, keep V5 and send car to scrap yard. Or if your feeling really naughty, cut numbers off and number plate and dump where the local youths dump nicked cars. Not a problem ;)
