I'm having to do a re-install of xp pro, problem is my disc is heavily scratched and i've tried twice to do an install with no luck as files showing as they can't be read from disc.
Can anyone recommend any way of getting round this, other than buying a new copy of xp? Ie can i use a friends disc, and then install my cd key or do i have to buy new?
Thanks ;)

Using a friend's CD is fine, also you should be able to just buy the XP media kit for about £20 which just gives you the CD with no serial key.

I'm fairly sure that's about as illegal as it gets.

Now that I dont think would be entirely legal.

Look at the front of a windows CD and it says in big letter "DO NOT MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES OF THIS DISK" which means someone must have copied and shared it on bittorrent therefore making it illegal.

How do you define an 'illegal copy'? Is it a copy that is accompanied with an illegal serial key?

Plus, you are not copying the disc, but the files on the disc! (What if I only copied half the files one day, and the other half of files the next day).

I think you know the answer to that :p

It is illegal if your copying for use by anyone else or on any machine that does not have a valid license for the software.

Also sharing your "copy" would make it illegal too.
