This tip might be common knowledge but I've only just come across it and it works.

I had a spare monitor that I was using to set up a second PC. In a recent house move though it picked up 3 fairly nasty 1-3cm scratches. One of which was pretty close to center. Apparently though buffing them out with isopropyl alcohol works by dissolving the antiglare coating a bit and using it to fill in the scratch. Figuring that the can of Halfords electrical contact cleaner I had lying around is pretty much the same thing I gave it a go.

It works! The scratches are completely gone. I used an old, fairly course fibered towel over my thumb, and sprayed with contact cleaner to clean the area up, then working the scratches themselves the same way but using my nail to give added pressure. Once the scratches faded I transitioned into a more circular movement to level things off, gave the whole screen a quick wipedown and that was it. Job done in less than 5 mins.

So yeah, don't panic if you scratch a monitor or tv screen. It's probably fixable. :)

I forgot to get a before picture though so no pics, sorry :(

Few people realise they can be fixed or hidden, I have a chip out of mine it wouldn't fix though :(. Although I have put a small dab of silicone grease and massaged it in. Wiped away excess and the chip is completely unnoticeable. You can notice the grease mark with it powered off but when running it looks good as new.

I'll certainly try your idea in the future, hopefully won't need to though :D.

Dissolving bits of your screen? Sounds terrible to me.

Vaseline or lip salve works for most thin scratches that aren't too deep.

does this not cause non-uniformity in the coating though? So although not as obvious as a scratch you end up with a patchy coating
