I have just completed my 1st real build, every thing worked well and booted up 1st time, I have installed winXP, (cause thats all I have atm) and installed all the drivers....But I seem to have a flicker problem......

My spec: Asus PQ5-E, intel E8400, XFX 8740 1 gig, Samsung F1, OCZ 700w, Kingston Hyper 4 gig....

My PSU is the OCZ 700w modular unit, with the connections that came with the PSU I have used the 1 red (8 pin - 6 pin) & the (8 pin - what looks like an 6 +2 pin) I have connected both these to my card, and left the loose 2 pin connection, that is joined only by wires to the 6 pin, hanging free....

Have I done this correctly? or could this be the cause of the flicker....Hope I have explained my self so you may understand....

Okay so by my understanding you have both powerlines connected to your graphics card and have left the the two pin hanging loose by your card? Without knowing to much about your power supply I cant say if you have the right lines hooked up to your card or not but it seems that you do, I dont see how the 2pin could cause a flicker problem but if I where you id cover the end with some insulation tape and tie the line back so its out of the way...

Also try downloading the most upto date drivers from the XFX web page and see if that helps?

thanks.... will try latest drivers.....The cable to me looks like it could be used as an 8 pin or a 6 pin connection....if used as a 6 pin like I said the 2 pin section pulls away from the 6 pin side...I have also taped the end and secured it to the cable with tape..

Do you think this could be a software problem?
in the mobo manual it does say dont install drivers untill service pack 2 or greater has been installed for better compatability ans system stability when using win XP.....Unfortuanatly the only OS I have at the moment is XP home.....I was gonna down load win 7 try that and buy on finale release, didnt want to waste money on vista 64 for 12 months use and then decide to buy win 7....

get SP2 or 3 for xp (windows update will give you these) get the latest drives for you graphics card, set it to native res for your screen, and then hope its not there anymore.
