I have re installed xp onto my Dell precision m60. Although the re format went fine and also installing sp2 the screen never went off at all. But when i finaly
did the re start at the end, the screen doesnt stay on. Its fine for about 20 seconds and then its gone.

What i have discovered is that if i pull the plug to the screen under the button strip and replace it, it comes back on emmediatly, graphics look fine but then its gone again after the 20 seconds.

This laptop was given to me with this fault but im hoping its not too expensive to fix.

This is the plug i am refering to.

Thats a good question. i would say its the backlight. You can just about see what was on the screen before it went off. And when i remove and replace the plug, its back on the page where it was.

In that case it could be 1 of 2 things, either the inverter that powers the backlight is cutting out ie faulty, or the backlight itself in the lcd is cutting out.

You can test them if you do a google but be aware some fairly high voltages involved, we just usually swap test them, but it means buying one to try that.

At a long shot it could be the mainboard not sending a signal but thats last resort really.

All sorted now. Got a new inverter for a tenner and ........result.

Thanks for the help.
