screen tear

Recently bought a B* grade MSI GTX670 PE 2 weeks ago for £240, couldn't resist as I had just sold my HD6950. Ive been loving the increase in performance but i'm getting screen tear in some games for example arma 2, red orchestra 2 and even the likes of bastion where the screen tear slowly travels down the screen. I've tried using nvidias adaptive v-sync, games v-sync and both applied but to no avail. I'm currently using a 60hz hdtv, cheers.

I had the same issue on my 60hz monitor, upgraded to 120hz and never noticed tearing since. Not exactly a fix as it will cost you a few hundred quid, but no matter what I did I couldn't stop it happening in certain games.

Have another monitor available to test? Are you running at the actual native res of your HDTV?

No other monitor to test i'm afraid. In gaming i'm playing 1920x1080 but the native res is 1360x768 which I use for my desktop resolution but just looks ugh in gaming. I Never had this problem with the 6950 but maybe thats because I wasn't achieving higher frame rates like the 670, I ain't too sure. My next upgrade will be a 120hz monitor.

Your wasting your time throwing 1080p at that tv, make sure you have recent drivers and if still stuck limit fps with EVGA Precision.

But as I say you must run a resolution the tv can support at 60hz, too much processing will be happening the way your setup, and the tv could even be running 24fps @1080 p

Well i'm running bastion now at 1080 and the screen tear has magically disappeared. I'm definitely not running at 24fps, of that i'm sure when playing the likes of Serious Sam 3, bf3 etc at 1080 and i'm getting a constant 60 according to fraps and afterburner. The main culprit is arma 2 but as I mentioned a 120hz monitor was the next upgrade path, this gives me a better reason to get rid of this crappy tv and go for it asap.

With adaptive vsynch turned on, you should have vsynch turned off in the game.

However even with adaptive vsynch on, you will get the occasional tear.

Is it a monitor or a TV?

Output at 1920x1080 with the TV downscaling to 1366x768 is a complete waste. Just output at the correct resolution if possible, otherwise 720p. Turn of any additional processing if it's a TV.

Its a . . . . . Technika . . . . . 'hdready' lcd tv, couldn't afford a monitor at the time so left that to be my last buy. When the resolution automatically changes to 1080 in games the tv displays a message (1920x1080p @60hz) so im assuming its some what capable but i'm not denying that I need a proper 1080p monitor. I'm gonna try out playing at the native res in gaming, just tried it with metro 2033 and bastion and without a shadow of a doubt there's a difference.

Tesco's finest it is but believe me it was not originally bought to be a gaming pc display. Will a 120hz monitor sort this screen tear issue? I'm just a have that niggle seeing as I went for a b* grade gpu.

It's far to specific to be a B grade component issue. As suggested above it's either software related or a quirk of the cheap components in the display.

Not quite sure how this works

If the native display is 1360x768 then why on earth are you trying to run games at a resolution the TV is physically incapable of displaying?

You can't just magic up another 1029120 pixels...

I'm surprised you don't just get a black screen when trying to run games at 1080P?

What's the model number of the TV?

It's a TV, not a monitor. The scaler fitted is usually the same across the range. I've got a 32" in the bedroom that accepts 1080i/1080p signals and scales them to the 1366x768 panel.

Utterly pointless though. Surely it would look worse than when running at native resolution?

Yeah, its mentioned earlier in the thread. Generally looks worse than 720p, even on the Panasonic. Can't imagine Tesco's finest does a better job. Panny does a much better job with native res via the VGA port.

Lol, precisely what I was thinking.

If I was the OP I'd have upgraded the display before buying a GTX 670.

Seems a tad ridiculous to have that sort of graphical horsepower running on such a low res screen.

OPs original 6950 would no doubt max more or less every game out there at 1360x768....

As mentioned iv'e tried a few games at the native res then changed it to 1080 and there's a big difference in quality. I'm pretty sure if I had it next to a true 1080p monitor it would lack considerably but there's no way i'm getting worse quality at 1080 than I am running native.

Yeah but you're not actually gaming at 1080! You're purely relying on the TV to scale it properly. like I said previously you can't suddenly magic up all those extra pixels. You've still only physically got 1,044,480 pixels to play with.

Yeah I realise this now but that doesn't stop the fact that i'm getting better picture quality than the native res. I'm fully aware i'm not playing at true 1080p and I now know the screen tear issues are more likely down to this crappy tv. No doubt that the gpu is being wasted on such a crap display but due to the info given this is to change a lot sooner rather than later.

Im sure when the tv is replaced with a proper 1080p monitor I will be shocked at the difference.
