I don't exactly understand what is causing this to happen but sometimes while playing games my screen will just go black and my fans will go faster and get louder and the only way to bypass this is by shutting the computer down via the power button. Any help would be extremely appreciated and thanks in advance :)

Did it start happening, or did the PC always do this when playing games?

Does it happen in all games?

How old is the PC?

Have you tried changing to a much older, or much newer graphics driver?

You could also try massively underclocking the card in the drivers to reduce power consumption.

What were the new parts?

Have you monitored temps when this happens? What fans ramp up?
I'll try to switch to a different driver now and i'll try underclocking. The new parts were just a new psu and watercooling for the cpu.

I will try to monitor the temps and i have no idea which fans ramp up although i have a suspicion that it is the gpu.

I had a similar issue. After extensive research, it was taking the heat sink off the GPU and cleaning, and putting fresh thermal paste on. Since then, it's been behaving itself.

I've had a similar issue with an older laptop, although for me, this happens during any type of usage, not specifically gaming.

I'd checked the crash logs, done memory tests, updated/rolled back drivers for various components, performed a fresh install, cleared out dust, repasted, everything I could think of. I'd observed this crash happening from time to time, but couldn't recreate it myself. The laptop could go a month without it happening, or it could happen twice in two days. It happened on battery power, when plugged in, or when charging - totally at random.

It's probably not what you want from this post, but I never got to the bottom of it. I still use the laptop and turn the power off/on when it happens - perhaps on a 11 year old laptop, its just some component aging and being unable to provide a reliable voltage...

Well done sorting it!

Same situation here but with a 4070

Most of the times there is nothing in the system log. But somtimes there is this
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
and then dwm crashes
Faulting application name: dwm.exe, version: 10.0.19041.746, time stamp: 0x6be51595
PSU is 850W. For me it has happen after 6-8 hours of use, usually during gaming but also happened when I enabled HDR in windows desktop.

In case anyone lands on this page with the same issue... What solved it for me was setting PCI generation to 3 instead of (auto)
