Scrolling jittery/jerky in XP

Morning all,

For about the last week, I've been having problems which I think must be related to my graphics card.

When I scroll up or down in various applications such as Firefox or Windows Explorer, the scrolling action is very jerky, whereas it used to be smooth. The only thing I can think of is that I recently upgraded to the latest (legacy) drivers for my card, a Radeon X800. At first I thought it might be to do with the latest Firefox release, but because it happens in Explorer as well, I'm guessing this isn't the case.

Secondly, when I boot up, all the screens prior to the blue Windows welcome screen have strange artefacts which look like rows of parallel colons like this: ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦

Once the Windows screen and my normal desktop load up, these artefacts disappear, but I'm wondering if these are related?

I've a horrible feeling you're going to say that this could spell the end for my poor gfx card :(

Running Windows XP SP3, ATI Radeon X800 - any other info which would be useful?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Alex

2 reasons why this might happen

1: bad drivers, no hardware acceleration ect ect and the os is running in software mode ect ect.

2: if your graphics card is running in hardware accelerated mode, you need to go into your mouse settings and lower the scroll wheel priority or make it higher for smoother windows scrolling ect.

if none of the above work, i have no idea.

Just to check, when you say to check the hardware acceleration and that the OS isn't running in software mode, is this by going into Display Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot?

If so, then it's set for full acceleration. Also, it isn't just scrolling which causes problems so I don't think it's mouse related, because it's also doing the same thing when dragging a window around the desktop.

Not looking good, is it?

I think I know what you are talking about. It sounds like when I've just installed windows XP and still need to install graphics drivers. The windows when moving are jerky and scolling is also the same.

I would suggest installing/reinstalling up to date drivers, or try different drivers to the ones your currently using.

I'm not sure what to say about the artifacts though.

start/run/ type dxdiag

let it completely run then click on display tab and all 3 acceleration area should show enabed.

Ok, done this, and got the following:

"DirectDraw Acceleration: Not available
Direct3D Acceleration: Not available
AGP Texture Acceleration: Not available"

I've tried different versions of the Catalyst driver, including the most recent and the last one which I know worked ok, but this doesn't help. Removed the existing drivers first using ATI's removal tool, and completely reinstalled.

If the acceleration features are not even available, it sounds like the card has had it, doesn't it?

Wait wait
I swear I remember ATI dropping all legacy card support a while back i.e. X800. I don't know if they meant that the new subsequent drivers won't work all at or they just won't update the drivers anymore but it's worth checking it out.

It will still work they just wont do any new drivers for it, I have the X1900XT and they stopped driver updates last year :( sniff. as for the juttering windows that is caused when the graphics drivers are not loaded/installed try reinstalling the lastest Legacy drivers or try some older ones.

From the AMD driver site:

"AMD may periodically provide Windows XP and Windows Vista driver updates (for the products listed above) for critical fixes only. No new features will be provided in future driver updates."

I've tried a couple of the legacy drivers, inckuding the last one which I know definitely worked ok (v9.1), but when I get home tonight I might try some others just to see if I have any luck. I've also emailed AMD support on the off chance they are actually of any help at all (not holding my breath!).

Thanks for the suggestions!

hehe, AMD support is proberly some forein worker reading from a checklist. Your answers will prob end up resembling a ball of well tangled string :D

Fair point. The next question, of course, is what on earth do I get to replace this card? Can't afford a whole new rig at the moment, so I'm stuck looking for a decent AGP card.

Meh.
