Hello, I dont normally deal with hardware that much and never in SCSI so i find myself somewhat lost with my current problem, any help would be very much appreciated.

I have a SCSI hard drive which was failing to boot in to windows XP Pro.
It's an IBM Hard drive
Model IC35L036VCD210-0
80P ULTRA160 SCSI

It was running as a single drive in a 1U rack server

I have managed to borrow a big tower server which has space for 6 H/D's but has only 1 h/d in there currently which is now running windows xp pro also. It is also Ultra160 SCSI, and my orgional hard drive fits perfectly in to one of the spare slots.

The Bios is set to Boot from H/D And does so fine with out my h/d plugged in.
If i plug my h/d in the server boots up and reads the following Devices are attached

CH A
SCSI ID: 0 Fujitsu - MAJ3091MC - 160
SCSI ID: 1 IBM - IC35... - 160
SCSI ID: 6 Dell - 1x6 U2W SCSI BP - ASYN

Somtimes when it boots the IBM "160" dispalys "failed to start" or equivalent message instead.

When Windows does load, I see only one drive.

If i press Ctrl A I whilst booting up i get the SCSI Utility. I dont really know what i need to be doing in there, but everything does seem to be in order. The boot device is set to ID 0 which would make sence.

Also, Somtimes windows does not load and i get an error message saying NO boot device available strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utility.

Any ideas what i need to do in order to get windows to boot so that it can see both hard disks, then i can get the data off the damaged drive.

Many thanks.

At the end of the day there's not much difference in getting data off a dying SCSi drive to getting it off a dying IDE disk, the trick, as you've discovered, is getting it recognised. You're cretainly heading in the right direction in that the server is trying to boot of SCSI ID0 (the Fujitsu) rather than the Ultrastar.

I've a feeling it might just be a case of getting lucky and the controller will pick up the IBM disk and go but it sounds like it's struggling to get it started, hence the system sometimes not booting. When it does boot are you just checking for the drive in My Computer or are you going into Disk Management?

Can you physically touch the IBM drive when the machine boots? Is it spinning up OK or is the head clicking about at all?
