I will probably just go for SATA in the future as it's easier and a lot cheaper to replace a drive if one should fail. SCSI is fast and reliable but when you look at the price of one 73GB 15K drive you can get four 250GB SATA drives which will give you pretty much the same performance.
I tried another HDD speed test program and the speeds still came out about the same.
Oops - miss read the specs on your mobo and thought you had 2*pci-x slots - hence the confusion - I share your frustration, but I wouldn't give up just yet - with the cost of PCI-e controller cards coming down all the time (saw one for £120 on Fleabay!) it will definitely be worth it. The new Sata's are blisteringly quick, but still bottlenecked (unless you get a pci-e sata card of course )
I'm certainly going to hang on until I can try out a new controller and then I'll decide.
