SD37P2 - Little tip for new owners regarding memory installation

Hi all,

My new SD37P2 arrived last week and I built it over the weekend. I bought a pair of matched DDR2 Geil memory to go with it.

The rather spiffy full colour instruction poster indicated how the memory should be installed but it lacked one important detail.

There are four memory slots, in two distinct pairs. Each pair has one red and one black slot. On the diagram it shows two sticks of RAM in one pair, one in a red slot, one in a black slot. I followed this and the Shuttle booted fine, counted the memory and seemed ok. It would start to install windows absolutely fine but would then, at random points, blue screen. This was all rather alarming.

I worked out that the pair of RAM modules needed to be installed in the two red slots (or maybe even the two black slots) for it to work. This might have been obvious but as they aren't physically next to each other and the instructions are not clear it foxed me for a while.

With that in place the Shuttle has worked like a dream. It is very well put together and is very quiet. I'd highly recommend it.

Cheers

Ash

That's odd, normally colour coding the slots means the difference between running dual channel or not, not if the computer is actually stable?

Download CPU-Z, and check in the memory tab that you are actually running in dual channel.

I think the RAM may be faulty, however the fault only shows when running in dual channel, and by running them the way you are, you're running in single channel.

As I said, what slots you use should make NO difference to the stability of the system.

i wondered which slots i should use too. i can't remember which one i used, but i'm very pleased with the performance.

let me know which ones you find are the best and i may open up the unit and re-jig the modules

I tried running CPU-Z last night and it reported the memory was running in dual channel mode.

I might have a fiddle at some point to see where the error is but at the moment it all seems happy enough. I guess I'm a bit lazy

If it's in dual channel and working, i'd leave it alone.

Memtest it if you wish, but if it throws up no errors, i'd assume that the motherboard is just fussy :)

Guys,

I’ve got all the components for my SD37P2 at last, e6600, 2gb dominator, x1950xt, etc.

before I start putting everything in, can you please address the following for me please?

1. any specific order of components?
2. i got the corsair dominator modules. do i need to remove the PSU, install it and than reseat the PSU?
3. can i install vista (RTM) on it? will it run OK? are the XPCTools running fine on vista?
4. is there a windows-based SW that I can use in order to control the OC of the CPU and ram?

many thanks for you’re assistance.

Cheers,

NC.

Don't they supply a build-manual any more?

I put mine in the order of:

1: CPU
2: Memory - you don't have to remove the PSU
2. Graphics card
3. DVD
4. Hard drive

No idea on Vista

Use the latest version of the XPC Tools to overclock

Cheers
