There was a well-documented firmware issue with the 7200.11 series a few months back (google "7200.11" and "self-bricking" for more info). Seagate took an inordinate length of time to even admit there was a genuine problem, but they eventually offered a fix for defective drives (although it was too little too late to save their reputation from taking a battering).

I guess most if not all the affected drives should have disappeared from channels by now - I don't think there's any statistical data to show that current 7200.11s are any more or less reliable than any other make/model, although as always different people will provide different anecdotal evidence based on their own experiences.

On the upside, the fact that mud sticks means that 7200.11s can often be found for bargain prices... :)

the cheapest, and back up :)
despite lolling earlier, I do have 4 1.5tb 7200.11s,as long as it's backed up, doesn't really matter.

I wouldn't guarantee its any good even if the verison number isn't on the defective list...

Basically avoid seagate 7200.11s (the .12s seem fine so far fingers crossed).

Compares well, because it has increased platter density (500GB/platter instead of 333ish)

Edit: i.e. somewhat slower access times but data transfer rate is similar.

I purchased 2 7200.11 1.5tb drives a few weeks ago and so far, touch wood, they've been working fine. They seem speedier than the 2 7200.10 500gb drives they replaced.
