Hello all,

I recently dual-booted my computer with XP and now Ubuntu. While doing this I ran a hard drive checking program before partitioning for Ubuntu. The program reported a bad sector on my main hard drive. I continued the dual boot.

This weekend I opened up my case to give it a good dust down and saw one hard drive was completely clean - as new. The other had some dust but I've seen much worse before.

Firstly, what causes a bad sector and what would you advise I do? I will be upgrading my major PC components soon and would like to get rid of this problem if possible.

Thanks.

a bad sector is a fault of the drive itself. Can be caused by switching your PC off incorrectly ( at the wall without shutting down ) whist reading or writing to the drive

its usually permanant.

You could always try and RMA
