Can i make my hard drive any quieter.

OMG its exteremely loud, my old faulty one wasn't nothing like this.

My hard drivce is a replacement for a faulty one from Seagate.

I have two hard drives, a samsung for XP games, etc and this seagate which i decided to put Vista on.

Now vista is on it and its being activly used i just can't bare the noise.

If it can't be made quieter where do i stand with seagate can i get a replacement?

I'ts that noisy ill ever by a caddy for it and have it as back up, or seriously dispose of it.

I got a feeling the seagate drives are a lot noiser now than they used to be because acoustic management has been disabled by default on them (to give them better performance), I dont know how to enable it though - perhaps a firmware update?

What you can try is getting on of those 3.5" to 5.25" internal caddies which usually have some form of anti vibration mounting, and also help cool the drive.

Bit a rip off for what you need but you get the idea of what I mean.

I had two 7200.7's and both were very quiet. Maybe download the seatools and try enabling the acoustic management for the drives. I forget if this model has a jumper that controls this feature, worth checking for at least.

Anyone else know more about the acoustic management.

I download seatools but just checks the disc for errors.

Curious about the jumpers.

UPDATE:

I have contacted Seagate and told them about the noisy drive.

They want me to try a few things before they exchange it (again).

They want me to try the drive in a different system and then if theres no difference they want me do a low level format with there software.

Question time.

-Should i bother going to all this effort?
-What is a low level format exactly?
-What are the chances of this curing the excessive noise?
-If for some strange reason its quieter on my other (older) rig what is that going to prove as its not for that rig?
-Should i just say ive tried it and theres no difference?
