Looking at getting this HDD as a back-up drive but have read that some people have had reliability issues with them.

Anyone here had any issues with this drive?

I've been looking at these drives too.

I've been reading mixed reviews on them: great drives, good value and quiet... versus, noisy with questions about reliability.

I know there have been two versions of the same model (7200.14 ST2000DM001), depending on where they're manufactured. 3 x 666GB platters or 2 x 1TB platters.

Some more information here:

It's the 2 x 1TB platter version you want to go for. (I notice the Overclockers description does say **NEW PLATTER DESIGN FOR IMPROVED PERFOMANCE** (sic!), which insinuates you'll get the 1TB platters).

Perhaps the 3 x 666GB platter versions are less reliable.

ive got the 3TB version, and i cant speak for reliability since ive had it less than 6 months, but it is quiet

I have 2 2TB in my main rig and 4 *3TB in my Server. Had no issues with them what so ever great drives and at a great price from OCUK. I haven't once heard the 'clicking noise' I think it was due to some faulty drives.

I've got two 3TB Barracuda's and they run quiet.

I'm really happy with them but haven't had them for long either so can't comment on reliability but I would recommend them.

Just for information, I've just bought one of the supposed 1TB platter 2TB drives from OcUK but its not the 2 platter version, but the three!

Web noted OcUK to ask what their stock should be, as this one isn't performing as good as the actual 2 platter barracuda I have.

2 platters: ~200 MB/sec max, ~100 MB/sec min.
3 platters: ~150 MB/sec max, ~75 MB/sec min.

Mine is W1E

W - WU - Wuxi China
1 = Platter type/density (1 = 1TB/platter)
E = 4 heads

It also has the dots, hologram and deeper curve mentioned here

I've got one of these. I've probably had it for about 6 months so can't really talk about reliability yet but I can tell you it is very quiet and runs pretty fast (I have Arch Linux installed on mine and it never feel sluggish and I don't notice any disk thrashing at all).
