Hi

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB ST3400620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM drive that makes a loud click sound approx every 20mins when the computer is idle. The drive comes with the new perpendicular recording technology.

The same sound also occurs instantly if the hard drive as started been defragged.

Anyone else experiencing problems with this particular drive or is it normal due to the new technology?

Welcome 2 the forums

If u mean click sound, like a hdd thats borked then no not good, but mabye someone whos got one running can advise further.

Either way doesnt sound normal to me. ;)

Are you sure there is no access going on like an A/V? If it is a loud click which sounds abnormal, RMA it. I wouldn't trust one that makes a noticable click as mine doesn't.

I formatted the drive and left it switched on and it makes the same noise without an OS installed

I have only had the drive for a few months if that. Would I need to post it back to the store as its under 12 months or would i need to RMA it.

You need an RMA number either way. You have a right to return it to the store as it is under a year, but also you can return to Seagate should you wish.

An RMA to Seagate might be easier as stores will not be so loose with a problem like this. Seagate would no doubt see the click and that you aren't happy and they would at least give it a good test. It's up to you. Before doing anything, do a 'quick' full media scan using SeaTools from seagate.
