I have around 10 of the Seagate SMR Archive drives ST8000AS0002 which have worked perfectly for years now as archive and backup drives.
These were re-branded around a year ago as Baracuda drives, which I purchased a further 6 of, which are ST8000DM004 model, but I seem to be experiencing problems with these after using them for a few months.
1st drive hung my server when writing to it, the only way to recover the server was to either pull the drive or a physical reset of the server. I pulled the drive and connected to my desktop, and it worked fine until I tried to write any data to it (4TB used) so I ran the seagate Seatools, which it passed every test?
I cleared the partitions and reformatted it as REFS and tried to write to it again, this time all writes worked until it hit 2.5TB, it again passed all tests, so I re-formatted it to NTFS and re-run the test again and again it hit an issues around 2.7TB, hanging my desktop at the time it stops.
I returned it to the retailer, as seagate said that I had to, who did a quick test and said it was ok (no surprise) and sent it back, so I returned it once again and asked them to fill the drive, which they obviously didnt have time for a just issued a refund.
I now have another two of these barracuda drives doing the exact same thing, the 1st drive ran for around 8 months and then stopped writing at 2TB, I installed a new drive and copied the data over the network from my desktop to the new drive in the server (some files would not copy so were restored from backups) and it worked for a week, but this morning has hung the server OS on a large file write, and I had to pull the drive to release the lock on the OS.
The 1st drive has also passed all Seatools Long and short tests, so Seagate will not accept it for RMA.
Has anyone else had an issue like this with the Barracuda SMR drives?
