Got a month old Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB (ST3250410AS) and recently it's been starting to make grinding sounds when it's accessing data, just like the old drives did. It's also making a constant high pitched whine which is audible above everything else in my case :(

I'm fairly sure this isn't supposed to be happening so I'm wondering if this one is already on its way out?

e: De-fragging it now as about 80% of the files on there were fragmented :| The thing still sounds like a pepper mill.

nows the time to start making backups incase it does fail...

High pitch wine could be bearings on the way out :(
Got 4 seagates myself and its the newest one (500G) thats playing up just now...just bad luck i guess as others have been on 24/7 for 4 years now with a problem. Definately time to back up anything important. Thank goodness for a 5 year warrenty eh :)

Backing up onto one of my IDE Seagates (which has been running for a couple of years no problems ;p). Just looking into the RMA for the Seagate HDDs, do you know if they make a quick turn around or will I be left one short for a while?

Not sure mate as not done mine yet as it came back to life after a few weeks disconnected...only to start making the noise again after a few weeks :(

hope its quick though

Shame, these were highly recommended by a lot of members here, I was even looking at getting a second before this started!

Seagate still have one of the highest reputations for reliabiltiy in the hard disk markets. All brands will have some failers, and of course on most forums you only get to hear the bad not the good.

Even DeathStars didnt all break, they were just a little worse than average.

Seagate have a good long warrenty period too, which indirectly implies they have faith in their product (or it would cost them a fortune in warrenty replacements).

Over the years, I've had less Seagate drives fail than any other brand, (even though I use more Seagates!), although Samsung have also been very good for me in terms of reliablity. Heat can be an issue with hard drives that can reduce lifespan, the Sammy in my Sky+ STB overheated and failed :(. But in a properly cooled desktop most drives should be ok. (IBM, and Quantum were the worse in my experiences.)

i RMA'd a Maxtor 250gb with Seagate a few weeks back, after them receiving the drive i got one back within a few days ...pretty good work.

It seems to have calmed down a little, no whining tone and no grinding. I'll still keep my eye on it and have backed up everything just in case ;)
