I just got a pair of these drives from OCUK, with a view to dropping them into a sata 3 controller (asus U3S6). When i power up one of the hard drives is recognized and the other appears as a 4.1gb drive.
In windows the drive that is detected properly appears ok, but when i try and format it in windows (vista 64 bit) the operation fails and the drive disappears. It is then not detected in bios until i chage the sata port. This happens whether it is plugged into the controller card or directly into a sata port on the motherboard.
The second drive is not even seen by windows, and bios post says there is a hdd failure. This unit emits 11 short beeps on power up, again regardless of cable and sata port it is connected to.
Whats going on with the first drive, and is the second drive DOA?
Just found this which basically is exactly what seems to be going on with the second drive:-

So it sounds like its return to sender...???
