I have this Seagate 400gig packard bell external hard drive. Basically it got really hot one day and then the next day when i turned it on, it powered up fine and you can hear it spinning, but it has a different noise than usual and its not detected by windows as if i hadnt even plugged it in.

can anyone suggest what i can do to get this to work or if it is totally dead, somehow recover this data?

all help would be appreciated. thanks.

I had the same problem with my segate HDD, When I tested it with the segate software it said it had a bad MBR, but it offered no help in fixing it :mad:

. I have tried other programs and they cannot find the MBR and they cannot detect it. There is one more program I will try some time in the next month or so then if that does not work I will declare it dead :mad:

A MBR can be rewritten, its not major I think

Correct, MBR can be quite easily rewritten. However, it's the cause of it disappearing that I'd be worried about (it might not be the only thing dead/gone.)
