Seagate Barracuda - vibrating?

Purchased an 80GB Sata-II Seagate Barracuda drive to replace my 74GB Raptor, which I have eventually got fed up with after 2 years because of the noise. The Raptor was my OS drive, so the new one has taken it's place, but since adding it I have noticed that my case is vibrating much more now, to the point where it is really annoying!

Strange thing is, it's not a continuous noise. It's quiet, loud, quiet, loud etc. Takes about 2 secs to go from quiet to the height of it's vibration, then back again.

Anyone else had this problem, or could it be a faulty drive? At first I thought it could just be that I had 3 drives in the case and with all of them going it was just a bit too much to keep quiet, but I started the PC up without this drive connected and it didn't do it any more. Just so frustrating as I got rid of the Raptor to make it quieter, and this is just as annoying! Thinking about buying a Samsung Spinpoint instead now, they any good?

Case is an Antec Sonata II by the way.

Hmm... Maybe its just a general HDD problem, with the fact they are spinning devices etc or one related to multiple drives and them resonating in harmony that causes the problem...

I have a 160 Seagate and a 250 spinpoint. The spinpoint has already been replaced once because of the same noise you are describing above. It’s a low frequency vibrating that I believe is being amplified by the Perspex window on my case. This new one was fine but after about 6 months now it’s doing it again The seagate is fine though, and vibration free.

I intend to suspend my drives using string/rubber when I get round to building my custom PC case, but until then I’ll just have to live with it.

But yeah, swap it. It will probably solve your problem. I hear seagate have good customer service and Samsung were more than happy to swap my drive when i said it was vibrating.

I've got exactly the same issue. I used to have just a 250GB Spinpoint. It was completely silent, but unfortunately it died after six months. I RMA'd it and bought a 250GB Barracuda 7002.10 in the meantime, again this was pretty silent. When I installed the replacement Spinpoint I got the noise issue. Funny thing is it doesn't do it every time, perhaps on one in every three boots.

Oh great, I'll probably swap it out for a Samsung that does exactly the same thing! :D

Oh dear, well I'll just have to give it a try I suppose, so blimin frustrating!

Rubber mountings are the way to go really. They'll absorb any vibrations from the drive and result in a quieter system any case vibrations. All of the drive bays on my Thermaltake Shark case have rubber mountings for the drives. Works a treat :)

Well the hard disk trays on the Sonata II have rubber blocks around the screw holes, so I don't think that's the problem in my case. I did wonder at first if the tray the drive was sitting in had a loose rubber block, but tried it in 2 different ones now and no change :(

Like I said above, I was going to try suspending my drives...

Has anyone tried this? Does it remove vibration better than rubber mounts??
