I'll keep this quick and simple as I've had my damn system hang on me twice while writing this.

While playing WoW, my computer has decided to randomly freeze - not even mouse movement. Only explaination I can come up with for this is the HDD as the light is on when it hangs. HDD is not overheating nor does the SMART report any problems. It is running on it's own IDE channel alongside 2 SATA HDD's. It's model number is ST3160023A and has never even had any problems before now. The hangs are random but I haven't done any other intensive HDD activity.

I'm testing both my seagate drives with their disc checker however I'm sure it's the model I mentioned above. So fails so far. Warranty is good until december 2009.

Any ideas about why the monkeys my system hangs?

Ok, I've looked at the system event log and found the following problems:

The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort2, did not respond within the timeout period.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.
The device 'ST3160023A' (IDE\DiskST3160023A______________________________8.01____\4a35335346545635202020202020202020202020) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

Now, erm, kek? I've never had this problem before and the hard drive randomly decides to disconnect its self? I've been running SeaTools on the long generic test without any problems however the moment I run a program off it, all hell breaks loose!

I'm at a loss :(

Well I just made sure that it wasn't the cable coming loose and it isn't. Like you say, RMA sounds like a nice idea.

Few quick questions about that:
Does it cost me for a new unit or just for the postage?
Does the new unit come with a new warranty?

Just postage.

Replacement unit assumes control of any remaining warranty left on the current unit...which, being a seagate, is usually a long time...

Ah good. That's why I pick seagate really, the 5 year warranty. Never thought I'd have to use it though. I've sent an e-mail to Seagate about it so I'll keep this updated with what's going on.
