How are Seagate managing to knock prices down so much? I'm tempted to buy 1 but after having bad experiences with the 2 Seagate drives i have owned in the past ill go WD or Hitachi but it is very tempting to get a Seagate at those prices.

Has the reliability improved in Seagate drives in the past year and a half?

I had very bad experiences with Seagate drives a few years ago; I'm staying well clear of em!

Personally, I just buy drives from all the hard drive makers now. The bottom line is, never trust a hard drive.

Always keep multiple backups, I tend to buy hard drives in pairs.

They screwed up didnt they with some really poor models recently. I've had only ever had seagate since early 2000, never again.

I've never trusted Seagate drives. I don't know why, but I just haven't. They seem to be cheap as well as low quality. IBM/Hitachi drives aren't much more expensive, yet the difference in quality is like comparing night and day.

Things went even further downhill when Seagate accquired Maxtor. Things were never going to get good after that.

Ditto.

If your data's important, back it up!

There's no guarantee that a manufacturer will always make good drives. There's always a chance they'll release a bad batch or model.

Got a Couple of Seagates that have lasted ages, but personally i prefer WD even tho they seem to be priced a little higher.

I go one step further and mix the brands. e.g. a Samsung and a WD in a raid. I personally have had the situation where two WD's in the same batch died at almost exactly the same time. Close call as I was restoring a raid as the other started clicking  Lesson learned! At the least if you want to get the same brand in a raid, get them from different suppliers so they should be different batches.

Many years ago Maxtor were fine. They then seemed to fall of a cliff with their quality and then got bought by Seagate.

about a year ago I was reading various reiews etc and decided I would go for seagate this time ... been using 2 3tb m001 drives and they seem fine; I decided to stay away from hitachi over some failures I've had and well WD I think had some other issues.

seagates biggest failures started with the 7200.11 series of drives, the countless firmware issues causing bricked drives and data loss. that series never recovered even after the updates.

At the time seagates official response on the 7200.11 series drives was to drop warranty from 5 years down to 3 years.

says it all really.

Unlike others, i have never had a problem with seagate, although Western Digital do provide better warranty, and apparently better quality

Personally if your on a budget grab what you can afford, if not then pay a little bit extra and get a WD drive :)
