Need a new drive for my laptop and i want around 500gb so SSD is a no no. are the Seagate Momentus XT's any good. its the drive with a 4gb SSD cache. was there ever real world difference with them and a normal 7200rpm drive?

also open to drive suggestions
 
when i used my laptop, i went from a 120gb 7200rpm hdd to the 1st gen 500gb sshd with 4gb nand.
i have to say its like night and day comparing a hdd to a sshd, but only if you use a small number of programmes
you'd get like 60-70% of the benefit of ssds, and the storage capacity of a normal hdd.
 
they would offer faster performance,even better if you can install an ssd into the dvd drive bay,keep current hdd for storage

Yes i was thinking of doing that dropping a 120gb SSD in and a cheap 320/500 hdd, i cant believe there under £40 NEW:eek:, after the big price boom on drives i did think they would never comes back down

Laptop is just used for films and general(facebook(wife), ebay and so on) stuff.
the sshd's are only £55 i may have to get one, i think i will do some you tubeing
on this one
 
My laptop uses mechanical drives with 8gb ssd cache and its definitely faster than just mechanical and a lot faster than a cheapy mechanical hdd though still slower than an ssd - off the top of my head I think it boots in about 18 seconds with ssd hybrid mode on and 40 seconds with it off. Same laptop with an ssd boots in about 11 seconds (though not compared with the same OS install).

so basically, booting into windows, browser?
if that's the case then a sshd will be absolutely fine
you wont notice much difference for media files (comparing hdd to sshd to ssds)

I would only get a very cheap drive if i was running an SSD too. if not i would be getting an hybrid.

am not wanting to run a cheap stock drive al all but i would if just used for stacking films on.
 
having the os on an ssd that's the biggest gain,using your current hdd for storage wont lose you any performance tbh,things like games/films/music ect

or a hybrid if you want, but for out and out speed then an ssd/os hdd/storage

i know but when i went to ssd's on my rig everything was just soooooooother, when you using the system to goofing about online. so i want that smoothness on the laptop but also need some storage, for the kids dvd when where out in the car.

i have seen the Seagate Momentus XT 500gb(4gb ssd) for around £45. and the Seagate SSHD 500gb(4gb ssd)for's are around £55, am i right in thinking the SSHD in the new all singing all dancing model of the XT?

yea the xt was the 1st + 2nd gen sshd, the current sshds are 3rd gen.
i have to say sshds run stuff reasonably smooth too. but of course once you go ssd, you'll never go back ;p

Yer but £300 on a large SSD for a laptop in a VERY big no no.

SSD(360gb minimum size i would need/want) - Cheapest £263
SSD/HDD - £150
SSHD £55
HDD - £40

Price is not really a problem but when you stack it up like this is a no brainier. Al give the SSHD a go, and if am not happy al i drop a 120gb SSD in the second drive bay latter, but at £55 it as to be worth a go.

I have an old seagate xt, it has 3 years already and works great.
The new ones are called sshd yes, just make sure you are buying the 2.5" one because there are 3.5" sshd's from seagate as well.
 
With a lot of laptops you can buy a caddy that goes where the CDROM is, that takes a 2nd hard drive. So you lose the CDROM, but you can have an SSD in the slot where the hard drive goes, and the hard drive moves to the caddy in the CDROM slot. You get the caddies off ebay. I have done this with my wife's laptop (64GB SSD and separate spinning disk), and it works really well.
