Which should I get ? Need to lash up 4 of these babies.

I used to love Seagates but have switched to Samsungs over the past year due to their quiet nature.

Samsung 500GB HD501LJ Spinpoint T

or

Seagate 500GB ST3500630AS

The current Seagate's have been experiencing poor transfer speeds due to a different firmware revision. I would stay clear of them at the moment. The Samsungs aren't as fast as the Seagates but are supposed to be quieter. If you need good speeds then why not have a look at the Western Digital AAKS drive? It's faster than the Seagate and mine is pretty quiet. Have a look here. If the drives will just be used for backups then you may as well go for the samsungs as they are pretty reliable and should be quieter than the Western Digitals.

Have just bought 3 Seagate 7200.10 160GB for a mate and they are very good, as the Hitachi HD that these have replaced crashed while defragging and corrupted everything on it.

Got 3 for myself in a RAID 0 array and cant complain as are pretty quiet too.

I have 3 Seagate 7200.10 in my computer now, 2 200GB ones in RAID0 and another 250GB one. They seem very quiet and the 2 200GB drives I have had for years with no failure. I would go for the Seagate, you won't be disappointed with it, but that's not to say that the Samsung would disappoint either.
