Seagate or WD ?

The Seagate is the better performing disk.

Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) - PassMark Disk Mark score 1159

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache WD10EALX - OEM [WD10EALX] - PassMark Disk Mark score 777

Both have a 2 year warranty.

No doubt some will tell you how wonderfully reliable WD drives are and Seagate aren't (and vice versa) but I've seen no evidence that one manufacturer is overall more reliable than another.

Of the two I'd get the Seagate.

If it's of any relevance you can get a 2TB at OcUK for less than £100.

Save up some more pennies and get a WD 1TB black drive with a 5 year warranty. Enterprise class reliability.

I've always found the Seagate drives to be noisey and unreliable in comparison to Western Digital which I have used in numerous builds and never had an issue. The newer Seagate drives may be a different story however :)

I have 1 500GB and 2 3TB seagates in my build and so far had no issues and they certainly don't make any noise. But then I have owned WD drives in the past and to be honest didn't have any issues with them either. . . The reason I went with Seagate because they were slightly cheaper then the WD.

I bought 2 WD Black 1TB drives because of the goods reviews, and bench's..
And had a pair of Seagate drives a couple of years ago, and they both died in a difference of weeks between them. So, never trusted in Seagate anymore..

New story: one of my Black decide to stop working without any advice, running under Windows, and surfing in the net. Of course, the big block in my system. And a couple of weeks later, one of my 500GB WD Blue ended up suddenly too..

So, I went for a Seagate 2TB + 500GB Hybrid because I couldn't trust WD after those failures, as the same I did years ago with Seagate.. Besides, prices were tempting..

Having 1 WD Black and one Seagate allow me to compare them, and there's no differences at all for one brand/model to be above the other..

Silences units, very fasts, and hopefully will last longer enough until a 5-20TB units hit the market in a very looong time from now.. ;)

From the units proposed by the OP, get the Seagate..

Best regards.. :)

I've only recently given Seagate another chance as i've had multiple (tens) of failures and issues with the 7200.11 drives AND their recertified replacements.

And i just got off the phone with a client whose ST3000DM01 is 'clacking' on boot up, 2 weeks old and all.. 7th one to go of 43 this year. Oh dear, going back to retailer as i'm not accepting Seagates recertified garbage.

I miss the F3's :(

had a 500GB seagate delievered on Wed and it was DOA. But i have nothing but good stuff to say about their 2TB drives. never had a single problem with them.

The only Hdd i have bought, have been external ones. But when i was looking around for one, everybody recommended WD, so i went with the crowd and bought one, and it worked so well i bought another one a month later.

Have no experience of seagate.
