Hi All...

Thought that I would report this... my 500Gb 7200.10 blew up last night and it happened to be the one with all my documents and masters dissertation on... remember boys and girls backup your data!... I almost cried last night when I opened the case to the smell of burning :(

Sorry to hear that mate. The 7200.10 drives are definitely the ones to avoid at the moment.

I just got a 320GB 7200.10 the other day, under load it runs at 41 degrees (operational running temp according to seagate is 0-60) and normall urnning it's at 36 which is 5 degrees more than my primary wiundows drive 80gb 7200.7 - SMART status is also all green.

Is there any evidence to suggest that the 7200.10 is bad? form what I can see the same can be said for all brands because people out there have had all brands die at one point or other.

most companies quote 55-60*C as the MAX operating temp. I personally dont let any of my drives get over 40*C.

Mine are currently running at 31*C (ATA) and 37*C (SATA)

The cooler they run the better imo esp if they are operating for periods of 8hrs or more per day

Seagate and WD drives i stay away from......still dont have the confidence to go back to Hitachi/Ibm either

i have 2 300GB seagates drives here 1.5 years old
and i also have 2 western Digital 400GB 1.5 years old

i also have an old 20gb WD drive thats in my usb external must be about 6 years old and is still running great
never had a problem with any of them and they run practically everyday.

only hard discs i seen dying are IBM deathstars maxtors most ranges

could it be that some drives are coming from china
we all no that china hasn't any quality control.

all my drives are tawain made

stelly was your drive made in china or tawain?

Recently got my 1st seagate 320gb to add to my 2 year old maxtor 120gb sata.

So far all is fine -even thou its installed just above the maxtor it runs cooler - Maxtor@52 - Seagate @45deg under load

Tranfer rate Maxtor- 55mbit/sec - Seagate 73mbit/sec!!

Its also much quieter when running & seeking -i was aware of the issues with seagate but i figured they are one of the worlds largest suppliers with a 5 year manufactures guarantee (better than most) so i took a chance and so far i dont regret it - its fastest drive i owned :)

Never really checked the temp of my drives but my 4 seagates (2x7200.9/2x7100.10) are slightly warm to touch and to be honest all of them have a 120mm fan blowing over them and the 7200.10 are on all the time but not doing very much i admit as they just sit there accumalating data from downloads or streaming to another pc/laptop!

it would definately be worth imaging (Ghost 2003) your c:\ .9 over to the .10 newer drives - u will notice windows will load much faster

2 seperate machine though! but i am thinking of updating the 7200.9's to .10's
I have a full backup on a external 160GB Drive that i can image back the os/files/settings.

At the moment im running out of space again so maybe another 320GB first!

maxtor, samsung, lacie....

lacue dont make internal SATA drives though do they.

I have 4x SATA ports on my mobo so will buy a 2nd 320GB for ghosting purposes in the near future :p

As it stands now though, the 75mb transfer rate of the 7200.10 is amazing compared to the 55 of the 7200.7 with windows on and the 65 the maxtor 200gb i had before it got.

will get a 7200.10 to replace the windows drive too in near future

Thats really harsh, makes me glad I use RAID 1 for important stuff. Well... certain movies anyway. :o

Are you getting the data recovered professionally? It'll cost you about £500 but if its your dissertation it'll be well worth it.

If its recoverable its worth it - otherwise you add more value to a paperweight!

Wouldn't touch Maxtor, Samsung aren't great either, and Lacie make enclosures, not drives. They would fit anything that's available.

lacie make external drives, the mec's are either seagate, wd, hitatchi or toshiba, they used to use maxtor but dropped them i think, all of my lacie drives are great.
