i have today recieved my RMA 7200 HDD back from seagate upon inspecting the drive ive noticed that the drive is a certified repaired HDD not very happy as i assumed the new drive would be brand new?

Is this normal pratice for HDD companys as this is the first time ive RMA a HDD

The one good thing is that ive checked the serial number on seagates website and the drive is in warranty till 2013

Yep they can send reconditioned ones. It'll be in the small print somewhere. Should be fine though.

IIRC all the hard drive manufacturers reserve the right to replace under warranty drives with refurbs.

From memory a lot of the drives they get back under warranty often don't much much wrong with them, and the ones that do have problems often have servicable parts (a control board failure for example can mean the drive fails, but replace the board and the echanical side of things is fine) - a refurbished drive will generally have gone through at least the same level of testing as a "new" drive, sometimes more.

I think i've still got a Maxtor 20gb (from about 2000) that was a "factory refurb" replacement in one of my test rigs, that lasted 3 years for me, about 2 years for my nephew and last time i checked still worked.

That's not limited to HDD manufacturers - most electrical / electronic manufacturers prefer to send out refurbs to keep costs down. A great many faults are firm ware related which can be flashed up with later releases.

I've had both new and refurb'ed drives from back from Seagate, never really worried me to be honest provided the damn thing works :)
