I'm thinking about getting a hard drive to bung some games on and house my PC and Laptop images.

Would one of these be a better purchase than for instance a WD Black?

The Spin speed is a little low and with only 8GB of cache on a 4TB Hard drive seems a bit poor?

Hi,

The WD black will have the slight performance over the 4TB seagate drive but you will pay the extra £50 for the privilege.

The 4TB has 64MB Cache but uses and SSD type memory called MLC to boost the performance of the hard drive. The NAND MLC is basically what they use in some SSD's so Seagate have added this to the hard drives for the boost over a normal drive allowing faster boot times, install times and load times.

I am liking my first looks at the ..
Seagate Laptop SSHD 1TB 9.5mm 32GB NAND Flash Hard Drive £10 STEAM VOUCHER @ £89.99 inc VAT.
It is seriously time I replaced my old laptop harddrive!!

Questions...
Any ideas on what the max power draw (wattage) of these drives is?

I may be dumb, but I cannot find a USB Sata adapter connector on the OCuk website, such that I can do a clone transfer from a USB 2.0 enabled laptop. I am thinking I will need one that has an added power source to the connector...given the lower power output of USB 2.0. Do OCuk do such an adapter..or will they be sourcing one?

( maybe an idea for a bundle deal :D )

The operating power is about 2.2w

This adapter should work for a 2.5' drive but a 3.5' drive you will need a power connector https://www.overclockers.co.uk/star...-adapter-cable-for-sata-drives-cb-164-ok.html

Thanks Robbie...not sure that answers my Question...but wont hog a promotion thread.

Regardless of offers I would not buy Seagate Hard drives. One of the most unreliable hard drive on the market. Just an opinion from my experience with Seagate hard drive products. I just use Tosihiba these days with out any problems.

We use seagate in all of our system builds so if they were as unreliable as you believe then we would be aware of the problem. We sell hundreds each month and the return rate is so low.

Opinion is not fact, one persons poor experience does not a bad product make.

That 1tb 2.5" drive is interesting Rob. Is it compatible with the PS4? 32GB SSD portion is pretty neat, considering people are still buying 32GB SSD's in the shop for boot drives. This gives you that (although I take it you have not direct control over the SSD portion again?), plus storage. I can see it selling well.

Doesn't have to be a boot drive but will work best as a boot drive as the OS files are relatively small and will stay in the cache.

As a games drive it won't be amazing as you'll only have a game or two cached and the rest you'll be pulling off the mechanical drive.

All of my mechanicals are Seagate. Just retired one which I bought from here in 1997!

@Shamus: I too have had a significant number of failed drives in PCs I've been asked to look at being Seagate. It's easy to assume this is because they are very unreliable but it's just as possible to say that they are/were the preferred supplier for many OEM PC manufacturers and hence greater numbers to start will give higher appearance of failure. Also, OEMs (clearly with the exception of OCUK :D) will tend to use the cheapest components possible. Cheap doesn't tend to equate to highest quality or durability.
And sometime 'stuff' just happens...sometimes repeatedly.

I can almost guarantee that seagate market share is bigger than WD for System integration.

Combine that with the price difference at the moment. I imagine you have a very likely chance these days of seeing seagate in 3 out of 4 machines

we've sold 30,000 1 tb seagate drives under code HD-257-SE the return rate is 1.4% that doesn't include returns direct to manufacturer but I'm pretty sure if they were really the problem some people claim we would know about it.

Toshiba has a 6% failure rate and WD 2.2% all on 1TB drives.

I can't tell you whether they were DOA or anything sadly but All in all none of them are shockingly bad.
