So I have a bunch of hard drives in the cupboard, but one of them is a seagate 60 GB u series (the kind with the giant rubber protection on them, fnarr!) , and I know for a fact it contains about 60GB of my 'backed-up' data.
But for the last couple of years no matter what I try I can't get a computer to read the data. In fact last week the drive wouldn't even spin up, and I literally started whacking the table with it in frustration. So I bit the bullet, and eventually (after 2 years of on an off looking) found an identical drive on the bay to do a internals swap, hoping that this would work enough to retreive the data.
But before I unscrew the boards and stuff, I give it one last try with a usb - ide adaptor I have lying here and BINGO! the drive lives!
So copied all the data off, all the files are dated from mid 1995 upto 2005 , and a lot of them are documents and pictures. RESULT!
Moral: never give up, and, BACKUP your BACKUPS! (you do backup ,don't you?>
