Around 15-20% depending on application which is quite good :)

The Cache and new platter design obviously make a sizable difference.

That's not bad at all. I didn't realise these were 1TB platter drives, that's pretty cool. Should be faster sequentially than the short-stroked 640GB platter F4 320GB then, and perhaps about on par with the 7K1000.D.
Definitely something I'll be considering when the prices drop back down to reasonable levels.

I've got a wd 3tb green hd and am looking to replace it as I'm fed up with the tick...tick...tick of the heads parking/unparking constantly. I think these seagates avoid this issue but can someone confirm ? Now I've built a quieter PC I can hear it all the time!

Green drives generally do this. Any drive that isn't a green drive shouldn't park/unpark the heads anywhere near as much. If it really annoys you can change the time before it parks the heads instead of buying a new drive.

Out of interest when are you expecting the aftermath of the flooding for lower prices?

kd

I too would very much like to know this... I was about to buy 10x 2TB drives the month the floods happened... my home server upgrade went from sub £600 to over £1500 by the time the paycheque came through :(

I can't stand the thought of paying this much for HDDs... so I'm waiting.

Drives have leveled out now. Some sites have old stocks on some lines but not others. Once these sell out it will be safe to say that drives are going to remain at around £70 for 500GB, £90ish for 1TB, £105-110ish for 5x00rpm 2TB, upo to £150 or so for 7200rpm 2TB, £150-160 for 3TB 5x00rpm and up to £190 for 3TB 7200rpm.

Thats a rough guide on where itll be with lines dropping as an average whole by perhaps 50p to a £1 every week or so. Prices could even go up or down by this amount too but the above pricing is about right.

Fair enough, thanks for the reply.

Gonna be a long wait :( Just gonna have to manage the 9TB better! ... for now ... Blu-Ray rips really eat storage space :(

I used an app called wdidle3 (from western digital) to disable that "feature" on my WD Green.
