Hi Guys,

I'm trying to help a small Garden Design site improve their search engine ranking (NB: I'm not getting paid). At present they have a ranking of 0 and do not even appear when you type in their name without spaces. I have a general strategy for both Onsite and Offsite improvements and have done a bit of research however, i would like to know specifically how to get this effect:

Notice the links at the bottom of the main title? Can anyone advise on how to get that effect?

This is done automatically by Google, you can only achieve this effect if Google ranks your pages as important.

From Google: "Site links are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Google generates these site links periodically from your site's contents.

Because we generate site links dynamically, this list can change from time to time."

It depends on many factors such as how often your website is updated, how much content the website has, how important it thinks your website is.

Some of the simplest features to get SEO going:

1) Make sure all Title, Meta and Keywords are different on each page of the website. Make sure the Titles and descriptions are accurate to what the page offers.
2) Re-write all links on the site using mod_rewrite or similar.IE make www.site.com/product.asp?id=1212 to www.site.com/shop/category/productname
-From my experience, rewriting URLs has been one of the most effective ways of increasing traffic.
3) make sure you use <h1> tags around important content (etc)

I always go by this rule: 1 - make sure the title of the page has the keywords you are targeting. 2 - make sure the url contains keywords you are targeting. 3 - make sure the content on the actual page is emphasised by <h1> tags for the keywords you are targeting.

Many thanks thought. I knew about 1 and 3 but your second tip was very helpful. It's a really small site so i assume that it will never get the above google effect but i'll implement your tips ASAP.

Any idea what the lag time is between implementing a new keyword/h1 tag and google recognising it?

NB: Site has already been indexed and will contain both the google analytics javascript and the google verify link. I also will be adding a sitemap.xml file.

You can never really tell when google will update their index. It depends on a lot of factors but should be with in a couple weeks.
