The only thing I have been doing is running my pc as an administrator, just as it seemed easier than not. Would it make that big a different in the future do you reckon?

Massive difference. Make 1 admin account with a strong password, then make yourself and anyone else a standard account for day-to-day use. If you need to install something right-click the installer and choose Run as... (administrator)
