Right my mate has a car - a 1982 mk2 cavalier but it has no rear seatbelts

do we need them for it to be legal or was there a certain cutoff date or something?

any help would be great thanks :D

No you don't.

If it didn't have them when it was new then you don't need them now.

Get your ass over to www.retro-rides.com - there's a few nice mkII Cavs on there :)

*n

we're planning on giving it a damn good clean up after we've sorted a few patches of surface rust :D

we've looked in the boot and it looks like there are bolts there where the seatbelts would go, were they never fitted before 1987 or just an option?

Normally just an option. Should be easy to add 2 to the rear really.

Compulsory fitment from the factory was '87 on, but I expect they were an option for several years before that.

we just want to know if its illegal driving around without them for the time being, we will worry about fitting some once we've polished it

you can tell we've got our priorities right ;)

You can go round perfectly legal with people in the back and no seatbelts as long as the car was made before 1987. :)

excellent - just what i wanted to know

its the base L model, so perhaps they were an option higher up in the range maybe?

Yeah, I think our GL estate had them and that was an 83 model.
