Second graphics card problem

I have a GTX660 as my main card.

I have installed a GTX580 into my second pcie slot to use separately and not for graphics purposes.

The card is not being detected.

It has power as I can see the fans spinning.
I have the correct drivers.

I did have another GTX660 installed in the second slot and that worked fine.
I want to change to this 580 as it is supposed to be much faster at calculations.

Is there any obvious reason the second card is not being detected?

Perhaps your BIOS is expecting an SLI bridge? which obviously you can't do.

Have you tried plugging the monitor into the GTX 580 to see if that gives it a kick "hey i'm here"

I will try plugging in the monitor and see what happens.
If that fails, I will try plugging it in the main pcie slot.

My motherboard does not do sli, it does crossfire but I don't want to use that.
It worked fine with the same card although it was a different manufacturer.

I don't know that much about this, so this is just a half educated guess... if your MOBO is not SLI enabled it might be possible to run 2 Nvidia GPU's on it full stop.

Unless that is when you say "It worked fine with the same card although it was a different manufacturer." by that you mean you already have had 2 Nvidia GPU's going on it.

in the OP he says he had a 2nd 660 working fine, but swapped to a 580 because they have better CUDA performance

OP... first step is to check the 580 isn't faulty - take the 660 out and put the 580 in on it's own to check that it works at all
sometimes graphics cards just need reseating, check all the cable etc.

there's no particular reason why the 580 shouldn't be detected and available for secondary purposes, just not SLI obviously

worst case will be, set the graphics adapter back to default VGA... uninstall all graphics drivers, put both cards in the machine and then reinstall the nvidia drivers - reinstalling from totally fresh might give both cards the kick they need to get detected

failing that (and having checked the 580 isn't faulty), you might even try a full reinstall of windows

Problem solved!

There are two power connectors on this card. A six and an eight pin connection.
I thought I only needed to connect one of them depending on what plug I had available from my power supply.
It needs both connected and is now all lit up (Didn't know it had led's) and being detected!
