So I have a PowerColor Radeon HD4850 512MB, but in the chaos of moving house (twice!) I've managed to lose/destroy the box. Now, having seen some crazy deals on 4870s I'm thinking of upgrading. Would it be worth buying a 4870 512MB and crossfiring, or trying to sell the 4850 and buy a single 4870 1GB? Also, will not having the box seriously affect the selling price of my 4850? Thank you for any and all advice!

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I could really do with some advice with this, and I didn't get a single response before. :p

What res do you play at?

The jump to the 4870 wont be massive and your desire for crossfire would be unwarranted if you're at a relatively low res (1680x1050 or so).

Not sure on resale value though I'm afraid.

Given the price of 4850s new now (£80), second hand I would expect to get in the region of £55 for one.

Yer I play at 1650x1080. £55 is really upsetting have paid ~£120 for this kitten of a card. I might just throw it in my mates new P.C, and ask him for £60 for it. He saves a few pennies, and I don't completely rip myself off. That'll make that incredibly affordable HD4870 1GB only £50 for me...

Instead of paying you £60 he could pay another £19 and get himself a brand new one for that price, sheesh.. :o

Hi ease, i have a asus ATI radeon HD 4850, 512mb DDR3 ram, DUAL DVI/HDTV-OUT/D-Sub/HDP compliant/HDMI, with crossfire connector, i was wonder would you be interested in buying ? im looking to get rid of it because i bought the wrong card for my motherboard and and couldnt send it back. that way you could crossfire two 4850's ?. pm me or reply here in interested.

If you are set on getting a 4870 (great card, I've had 3 in various rigs) I wouldn't bother with the 1gb version for that res. I play at 1920x1080 with mine now (on my TV) and the 512mb version copes just fine.

Too be honest, i would wait for the ATI 5XXX series of cards

They are not far off now.

I just bought a 4890 upgraded from a 3870, i saw a significant increase but thats a whole series in difference and the 38XX range sucked at AA and AF which is fixed in 4XXX

but 4850 to 4870 you will not notice much, wait for 5870's.

you would probably see a bigger boost in buying another 4850 and crossfiring than getting a single 4870

He wouldn't notice the difference, and he owes me a fair bit of money at the moment anyway :p

I think I might just take ArcAne's advice and hold out and wait. The only game that I would really want improvement in is Crysis, so I'll just keep it as it is for now! Thanks for all the advice y'all!
