Second hand mountain bike or hybrid

I've taken my road bike off road before and it was still pretty fun. Maybe couldn't have kept it up all day though. Still, I'd hardly describe canal towpaths as "off road".

If you feel like you're having trouble balancing on your road bike after more than like 20 minutes of riding then there's probably an issue with your setup.

Also, this has completely derailed the thread, nobody even suggested a road bike for the OP.

Well I never called it off road but I can confirm that there are areas on our canal towpath that my MTB struggles with and I have to go very slow. I mentioned Coronation Street cobblestones but they aren't that, they are more like stones sticking up.

The problem is I'm 58 with bad arthritis in my hips, spine & knees. I have to use a walking stick sometimes so that's why I feel 'safer' on a hybrid or MTB.

I think this should probably be mentioned when giving out advice (and to balance, others should give an idea of their own physical circumstances too - like someone saying "I'm 21 and I've been riding professionally for 5 years whilst also taking gymnastics classes and weight training").

Important context. What's your road bike?

A Forme Longcliffe - it's awesome but not for my commute.
I also bought it for the Stoke City colours.
That was the day I bought it so quickly put Kevlar tyres on and cleats.
