im going to be selling one of my laptops soon and want to do a secure format on it.

the kind of thing that formats, and then runs a delete on all the empty data like you can on a mac, so nothing can be retreived as the delete function has basically gone over the empty sectors of the disk time and time again.

does anyone know of a program that does this, as i dont really want anyone accessing any of my personal data, and i dont want to fork out for a new hdd when i want to sell it.
 
DBan will work. You just need to write over every sector once, anything else is extreme overkill/theorycraft.
 
Win7 will do it if you select full format. You'll need to take the drive out and hook it up to another machine.
 
Install Windows 7, but perform a FULL format when choosing the drive at installation, before it copies the files. Do all the Windows updates, and run CCleaner on the remaining free space.
