moving onward from the moving away from gmail thread.

what other applications, extensions etc do people use?

anyone got any recommendations for

Cloud file storage? www.sync.com seem to be well regarded, servers seem to be in canada. They got any laws like the patriot or uk?

secure encrypted alternative to one note?

search engine? duckduckgo seem to be the most well known one who dont log everything you do.

seeing as windows is so easy to bypass sign in, any good ways to encrypt laptop and auto wipe if password is entered wrong to many times, or people try to bypass etc?

and anything else people use or do?

main concern is with so many services getting hacked at the back-end, and ease of stolen identity etc, backed up files etc contain a lot of info, as do web browser and other such apps on a laptop.

I use syncthing as a dropbox-like program. FOSS and doesn't involve any third party.

Duckduckgo for search, but the bang for startpage (!s) is pretty handy to get google-like results, and indeed startpage is a good choice for search in its own right.

For internet security protection purposes, i use these 4 tools.

  1. DuckDuckGo: Privacy Search Engine
  2. PureVPN: VPN Software
  3. ProtonMail: Email Encryption Software
  4. HTTPS Everywhere: Privacy Browser Extension

Tools I use.

LastPass- password management, encryption and VPN setting etc
2FA - Google Authenticator and yubikey (the yubikey works as a 2FA for my windows login and LastPass )
Encryption - starting to play with VeraCrypt
File storage - all on my NAS under my control, I only use Dropbox for no sensitive stuff. Note backups of important data are on another NAS offsite under my control.
Internet privacy (home) - looking a pfsense to root all traffic though a VPN
Internet privacy (mobile) - TunnelBear and home based VPN server

I don't trust DuckDuckGo anymore since they've lied about storing cookies. More info here: https://archive.is/qntuk#selection-241.18-241.124 They give their users a false sense of security. Instead, I suggest Startpage.com or ixquick. Startpage was recommended by Edward Snowden and gives better results than DuckDuckGo :)

but everyone knows it & its the top privacy search engine. Well, any alternative you can recommend?

thanks, switched to startpage, seems good enough.

Also went with Sync.com in the end for storage.

Still not sure what to do about encrypting laptop HDD in case it gets stolen when out and about? anyone got any suggestions.

Bitlocker works just fine assuming you've got the "Pro" version of windows, otherwise try Veracrypt.
