Anyone got any tips for what models to look for? Wireless would be great but LAN will be ok, something with an IP so i can go into it from anywhere.

Cheers?

I know that they cost a fair bit... you should be looking at.... erm... I think that CISCO do a couple..

These are so expensive i would consider getting a really old pc, networking it and connecting it to a webcam instead. If that would work?

You might even be able to do it using very long usb cables. If its really long, put a powered hub in the middle, but usb can be used for networking so i expect it would work.

No, no, no! There is a reason Axis cameras are so expensive. They have excellent optics and and are properly designed for the job. You're putting this in for security, right? - so go to a proper company and lease the stuff if you cannot afford to buy it. Security cameras that don't deter are worthless. So they need to be visible and working - that means night vision lenses and IP68 enclosures if they are outside.

Swivels are also expensive, so you may find it's more cost effective to have more fixed field of vision units than fewer moving ones. And IP addressing is absolutely essential to allow proper streaming of the data. If you use USB, the bandwidth is theoretically maxed out at 480Mb/s but in reality the devices will be USB1.1 (12MB/s). Even the simplest network setups will eat that for breakfast, and theoretically you could use Gigabit ethernet, although I don't know oif any cameras capable of that.

USB cams also rule out wireless connections.

Sorry to come over all - expensive of nothing, but if you something worth protecting, then protect it - don't mess about (in my opinion)

Thats a fair point and very relevant if this is for business use but for home use i wouldn't say its worth the money.

So it depends what your using it for and what it needs to do...?
