The joys of living in studentville! Im gonna be moving into a house in a real studenty area of Newcastle, im a bit worried about my computer setup being nicked! i was wondering whether any1 runs any kind of camera through thier pc?

a friend of mine had he has turned over and after that went to a well known auction website and purchaes a set of about 8 cameras i think it was for about 150 quid.

he said the quailty is really good and clear.

might be worth a try there

Not a great idea to have cameras saving images onto a PC that has just been stolen!

You'll be needing either a hidden PC or a server off site to store the images.

thats true! aaaah this is so annoying! the house has no double glazing and no alarm!!! what if i had it saving images to a naff pc tha no1 would steal, or a wireless webcam?

all ya need to do mate is a get a cam or 2 for ya pc, then use something like digi watcher or some other pc based security cam...........then any pics it takes (of movement) you can set it to upload them to an ftp site.......I use my internet providors webspace i get, then even if pc is nicked you can easly access them from any pc and hand to the police, sorted

this sounds really wierd but is good legal advice.

If you put up cameras you MUST have a notice up saying cameras are in operation.

If you dont, your evidence will not stand up in court.

Best of luck. ;)

You may want to get a fierce dog. Works like a dream :D though the postman dosent visit as often as he should

If you've got an old PC going spare, I'm sure you could hide that away somewhere and wire the camera up to that.

In that case, you'd need the camera (duh), a good-sized storage disk for that PC, and a program that will record when sensing movement (there's plenty around, afaik, or even some free ones that just take snapshots).

or:

get one of those awful fugly server type cases a metre high,
and put your uber-PC inside it.

bolt in some concrete blocks inside
(pour one to fit the spare spaces at the top/bottom)
so the thing weighs a ton

cover it with dirty marks and Win98 stickers
and hide it under the desk

buy that duff thinkpad thats for sale in MM,
and leave that on the desktop as a decoy.

a thief wants to be in and out in five minutes,
if he can see a nice laptop, he'll take it and go.
- he won't want to make off with a big heavy fugly case.

all the CCTV in the world won't get your PC back, so why bother ?

:)

Where abouts in Newcastle? Heaton perhaps?

aaaah your casing the joint already :P hehe yeah well just into sandyford. Ok im going off the idea now seems a bit off a faff i might just use the good old trick f hooking a shotgun up to the door

there are secure lock things that lock the pc case to say a radiator pipe... or you can buy like gas things that when you try to steal it, a cloud of gas engulfs them..

not very detailed but you get the gist lol. those would be more helpful in preventing the theft of your pride and joy.. cameras prob would only help identify them, if their hoody isnt in the way ;)
