security clearance

For my previous job i had to be security cleared, i filled in all the paperwork etc and sent it all off. i was at the company for about a year but didnt hear anything back and now i'm trying to find out. i have been trying to contact my manager but he's not replying. my old team leader told me off the record i had the full security clearance but i want proof. Is there any way i can find out ?

also how long does it last, i heard it was 2 years but someone else said its now only one ?

If you are talking about a CRB check, then they only stay with you when you are at the same company.

From memory it's 12 months after leaving a job that no longer requires it. Within that period it can be transferred by your sponsor.

Fyi, sc can access up to secret info with occasional access to top secret info. Obviously it has to be relevant.

If you had it, you can't talk about it or even put it on your CV.

What level of security clearance are you talking about? BS or SC?

Its not your manager you should be talking to anyway, your previous employer should have a department for security and a named person called a security controller.

It might be sensible that you delete this thread very quickly.

It can go on your cv, it's a requirement for a lot of roles... Not to mention it's not exactly secret, ghcq mention all levels of clearance on their site under recruitment...

I had a quick look, but cannot find this.

I have a document in front of me now, which I am not allowed to name, which specifically says you can't disclose the fact. I can't even type out the paragraph because its part of a document which is higher than UBS.

GCHQ mention it in adverts because they have a "need to know" and are asking, not advertising that they have it.

In case you were wondering, yes I do know what I am talking about and unless you have a specific clearance, I can't discuss it with you even over e-mail.

Well you said you worked in IT in the last jobs thread, and I couldnt think of anything IT based that would require such a high level clearance.

IIRC someone on here is in the Customs national strike force. Now that is a cool job title. Although they will probably come under SOCA now.

Nothing in the official secrets act says you can't mention you have clearance. Mi5/Mi6 allow you to tell people that you are working for them and clearance would be assumed in that situation.

If it is written in a classified document but not uk legislation then it's not a criminal offence, rather a breach of contract to mention you have clearance. Ironically, saying that a classified document says you can't mention your security clearance, is illegal under the official secrets act.
