Security Popups in Vista

Registry virtualisation, protected mode IE, restricting privileges of all running programs to a sensible level...

I always find these threads interesting, especially the 'knowledgeable' windows users who think running as admin with no other protection is something to be promoted. It was a flaw in XP, and some people are determined to make it a flaw in vista. It's like not putting a trapdoor over a hole in the floor because 'I know it's there so I won't fall in it'...

It's also worth noting that one of the rationales behind UAC is to get developers to improve their software. The vast majority of third party applications (particularly games) have absolutely no reason to require elevated privileges for running other than bad coding.

Here speaketh the truth. Well done.

Out of interest, what program are you using that requires UAC to be off?

SyncBack.

It's really odd all folders that I back up started to not copy/do their back up function properly.

The log at the end stated that certain files (several hundred overall per back up, scattered all over the place) could not be copied/dealt with because the program didn't have permission to deal with them. This didn't happen with all files though, only a proportion that needed backing up.

Hence I've had to turn it off, reboot, then redo the back up. Is there anyway around this? Because atm UAC is turned off.

It defeats itself by being over zealous.

When you're so used to clicking "oh for crying out loud YES, that's why I asked you in the first place", when you shift your weight from your left bumcheek to your right, you'll click it without thinking when it says "do you wish to install this malicious, code munching worm".
The pox be upon it.

Very true, I've turned mine to silent now mainly for the IE protected mode feature (and the other decent features as well :)).

It's the fact UAC doesn't like you tampering with files outside of your user area. The best you can do in the C: drive is create a new folder (right click, new) and some programs need re-configuring to work within your user area.

Had to reconfigure RoboCopy yesterday, it refused to save my script in the C drive, it was fine saving to my user area though.

It's a bit annoying in places, even on silent, but I'm keeping it on so I can use IE in protected mode. Hopefully the Firefox dev team will declare firefox.exe as 'unsafe' as well so it can be run in protected mode :)

Aye I figured it was something like that :).

The trouble is my storage area is a 500GB hard disk and I wish to keep it that way as it's my own way of navigating around and keeping things organised.

I don't use I.E., but Opera instead and save the most recent (only upto a GB) of System Restore points so bar a serious bout of bad luck I should be ok.
