Seemingly random lockups

Hey, i built my pc from scratch just under a year ago and have started having problems.

They come in the form of seemingly, completely random lock ups which can happen within 10 minutes, or after 3 hours. I sometimes can still move my mouse but a couple of times i couldn't. Can't alt + shift or ctrl + alt + del.

Reformatted, didn't help.

No new hardware.

Was overclocking, but set it all back to default, didn't help.

Cleaned the whole thing out for dust but again, didn't help.

So i assume it's a hardware issue? Will attach a dxdiag in case that can help.

Something else to add, when it first happened i remember i came back to a black screen and BOOTMGR.EXE IS MISSING, my boot priority had changed by itself for some reason. Also choosing my SSD, which is what my OS is installed on causes this to happen, but choosing my HDD which has absolutely nothing, is the only way to boot up.

I.e, when i boot up i have to hit F11 and manually select SAMSUNG HD204UI, or i get BOOTMGR.EXE error. Tried to fix the boot order but to no avail. This only happened once the crashes started and has persisted through reformats and resetting the bios to defaults.

unplug your HDD, set boot order to optical drive, boot with win 7 disk, repair, plug back the HDD.

Had a similar issue. When you install win 7 on SSD, you need to unplug your hard drives or all sorts of **** get installed on the HDD.

As for the crash, did you install windows with AHCI, or changed to AHCI after install?

I will try installing it with my HDD unplugged, although ive never had the problem before. I assume i should format them both, then unplug my HDD and install windows?

As for AHCI - i have no idea. I haven't purposefully done either. (I don't know what that is or how to enable / disable it)

Ideally, yes.

It's a settings in the bios. Set SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS, unplug the HDD, install windows, once installed plug back the HDD.

Literally just took a peek at the bios and found it, it's set to IDE and switching to either of the others fails to boot up windows (unsurprisingly). I want to make sure this would be it before i reformat again, because there was no new software or hardware that triggered this, i left my computer on and went out to the shops quickly, came back and this started happening.

Edit: Also, something else which may or may not be of some importance, i turn off "Enhance pointer precision" due to being an fps player among other things, and every time i reboot now it turns itself back on.

Heres another way to get it working.

Disable AHCI in BIOS; turn HDD configuration to IDE
Click Start, type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER.
Locate the following registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Msahci
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
Reboot your computer and boot into BIOS setup
Turn on AHCI in your HDD configuration

It's not in AHCI though, it's in IDE. When i switch it to AHCI it dosen't even load windows, in IDE it boots up and everything is absolutely normal, untill it randomly locks out and requires a hard reboot.

Thats Ok if you can get into windows long enough to go from click start, just boot in IDE mode and go from CLICK Start.

but make sure you HDD is not connected just to be sure

Aye well, it did the regedit and am now in AHCI so i will give this up to 48 hours and see if the lockups continue.

Also if you can Backup all important Data from your HDD drive and reformat it to get rid of any MBR files that may be on it.

check if your sata cables are not loose also.

Random lockups/resets are quite often memory related. Worth running a memtest.

i would run memtest to see if it is your memory also using 1 strip of memory at a time also make sure you have the latestt firmware update for you SSD and also check to see if there is a bios update to help the stability of your system

Hey, so tried all of the stuff with HDD and ACHI and stuff to no avail, ran windows mem test and memtest86+ for 5 hours or so and found no problems. Have taken out my HDD and just kept the SSD in, no help. Have now taken out my GPU to see if that's the culprit. If it's not will try individual sticks of ram and after that i think i'm completely out of ideas.

Anyone have anything to add to that list?

What video driver are you using? I get the same problems every time i update catalyst to 12.4
As soon as i roll back to 12.3 the problem goes away!
Worth a try.

Shall give it a go, bit odd it would do it when my GPU isn't even in but worth a shot i guess. I am using the most up-to-date drivers, so i assume 12.4

99% sure it's GPU now, messed with drivers and god knows what else - no good. Anybody know what overclockers warranty like, if any? PC is roughly a year old and the GPU is gone.
