Self Build Laptops

Hi All

Just sniffing round for a new laptop at the moment, I think I'm going to self build some kind of barebook, or by a laptop and do what I need to do to it.

Must be dual core capable
Must be capalble of holding 2 2.5 inch HDD's internally
Must be relatively compact
Has to be widescreen

Any thoughts? The laptop needs to be used for a storage migration demo I'm doing (VMWare), has to be reasonably compact as I'm a consultant and have to carry it, dual core is essential, as is 2 HDD capacity (doesn't have to come with 2 drives but must be able to have a second added)

Cheers

Tom

Compact & 2 HDD's is generally a no-no.

Rock sell laptops to your specification, but they certainly aren't small.

Unless things have changed over the last year, when I looked into self-build laptops it really didn't work out worthwhile... I'd see if there's a decent pre-built one, if I were you :)

Hmmm - Is this rock direct? I suppose I may have to compromise on weight and size then, no point gettin a tiny laptop that cant do the task!

I used to use a Dell laptop at work years ago, it had the option of an internal HDD, internal CDROM and then two bays at the front. One bay held the battery, one held my DVD/CDRW combo. But I know that you could get a HDD and install it instead of the DVD/CDRW.

Think it was a Latittude C810 or something, not really compact though, weighed a lot.

And I've not really spotted any self build's that would do a similar job, sorry.

Yeah I was unable to find a decent prebuilt, most that had 2 HHD capacity were gaming laptops with no battery life and a badass GPU, the battery life isn't that important, but I definately don't need powerful GFX

Do any manufacturers sell laptop chassis'? I've read Aopen used to do a Barebook range but I can't for the life of me find anything available under the 775 socket available, does anyone know a range?

It seriously looks like pre-build is cheaper, which is a bit sad was looking forward to building my own laptop.

laptops are made differently than desktop pc`s
so you cant just get any case, any motherboard or graphic card, screen etc.
motherboards are made to fit just the manufacturers case (ie dell,HP)
if you got a bare bones laptop( the maker would pick out the motherboard with built in graphics to fit there case), the only things you would have a choice on would be , CPU,ram,HDD`s, DVD writer, which is what you can do on most laptop you buy anyway
its easier just to get a prebuilt

Yeah I realise that, just makes it more difficult. But even buying just a case, motherboard and gpu in one and then buying the rest is difficult.
