I've always thought self building a PC was a easy way to save some money.

These days there are plenty of places that will build custom systems for you.

Plus there's the usual "pre built" packages available.

Is there still much of a saving to be had by doing things yourself? Does the custom vs pre-built option come at much of a premium?

I'd argue if you're smart around 30-40% saving for similar performance/specs, but more importantly you get better parts as a lot of prebuilds tend to skimp out on certain areas.

A big part of it with prebuilds is honestly parts choices.

Nobody in the know would buy a Kolink PSU for example (at least not beyond super budget), and yet they're the go-to for OCUK prebuilds. They're not necessarily bad outside of their budget range, but they're crap compared to similarly priced competitors and lack the same warranties as an example.

At the lower-end I find the pre-builds are more competitive, especially if you need an OS license (subject to dodgy PSUs, low-end motherboards, slow/single channel RAM, etc).

Once you get into more serious gaming PCs, like £1000-£3000, then they struggle to compete with DIY.

For a custom-spec, a full build is not likely to be cheap, if you can get it built for less than a couple hundred you're doing well.

All pre built systems will charge you something to put the parts together so there is always a saving there but normally the most money can be saved be custom self building because you can source parts from different vendors / special offers. Also self building gives you more control over what parts you can choose from.
