I always shop in Sainsburys Headrow in Leeds and use the self service checkout. There are a lot in this store so can usually get on one straight away

Earlier they were full so went to an actual person. He didn't even bag the stuff up so I had to reach around () the other side, then bag it myself. He also forgot my Fajita kit and garlic!

Is this what normal checkout people are like in supermarkets now? Absolute waste of space. No wonder self service scan machines came in.

Don't really understand what you mean by had to reach around?

Normal tills they scan, shove/throw down to the end, you take bags from the end and bag things as they come down from the scanner. They've only ever bagged if you've asked them to, especially so now people tend to use more of their own multiple use bags.

I still find them less hassle than self service tills and having to get approval because you've bought something illicit like a sharp pencil and then knobbing about because the till has decided it can't detect the last item and demands you place it in a bag even though it already is.

A normal checkout operator would be female. He was probably relief on the tills and a little annoyed that he got called on to checkout.

Don't mind self-service tills if I only have a handful of items and if there's no queue to use them. People who use them for trolley loads of items are scum.

They're not your servants. They are there to complete transactions, not pack your bags for you and faff around with things you've improperly placed on the conveyor belt.

That very much depends on the till. Some tills are very much designed for them to pack for you and would require you to reach around if you don't.
It is also part of their duties, if needed.

Exactly this. Why should you stand there and wait for them to bag up YOUR shopping. This is the reason behind large queues. Its just completely lazy.

Well OP said he always uses self service, therefore OP always packs his own bags anyway.

I've never had a checkout person bag things for me except for when they've finished scanning way before i'm done packing and they throw a couple of things in. I wouldn't expect them to either.

There was no conveyor belt. It was a small stand next to a till. He scanned behind and put the left the stuff being the scanning thing. I had to lean over, get my shopping and bag it. I wouldn't have minded if he at least pushed it forward to I could put it in the bags myself (and if he actually scanned all my shopping instead of missing some!)

I must admit, i've literally never in all my life encountered such a till

You've never encountered a till, with bags to the side, with no where to place items other than straight in the bag, where do you live. Especially populate in metro stores.

If you wanted your bags packed you should have asked that you wanted help with your packing. They are not mind readers. Also the 1-2 bag thing is policy with most if not all supermarkets. It's not the checkout person being anal.

I've worked checkouts before and most customers are *****. People standing bottles upright so soon as the belt moves they fall over which could end up on the floor and breaking. Also morons who think they are too good to use the next customer bars... I can go on all day.

No swearing.
